Bipolar Schizophrenia Gene Link

New Swedish Schizophrenia and Bipolar Study

A new study suggests that Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia are genetically linked. The study was performed by Swedish researcher Professor Paul Lichtenstein, PhD and was published in the Swedish Medical Journal, The Lancet. The genetic link between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder has been much debated in psychiatry.

In the study, they identified, 35,985 people with Schizophrenia (.40 percent of the population) ad 40,487 people with bipolar disorder (0.45 percent of the population. They used the Sweden's multi-generation register that links every person born in Sweden to his or her parents.
